Four Favorite Things I Love Right Now! Part 17

Yep, it's that time again -- Four Faves.

I don't really keep count of what I ever write about on this blog, nor how often I do a favorites post, but it does seem to be monthly lately.

I'm glad because I really, really love passing out advice, so I love writing about this stuff.  Sometimes I think I like to write one of these posts best because it is easier than one of my regular posts, but that's not really it.  Sometimes I think I like writing them when I'm not feeling quite my usual happy self, but that's not it either.

I think I just enjoy talking about things I like.  I think we all do.

Last year Joanna told the person who got me as their Secret Santa recipient at Community Partners of Dallas that I was easy because everyone already knows what I like (and don't like, but that's a different blog post altogether!).  My Secret Santa Lauren did a fantastic job, so there are some benefits to letting people know what you like, people.

As an aside to the ladies -- tell your husband what you want him to get you as a gift.  He just wants you to be happy -- don't make him guess!

NOTE:  I know you think that he should know what you want if he loves you.  He doesn't.  See italicized line above.

NOTE TO NOTE:  Yes, I know I've never been married, so why take advice from me?  Because I'm right.

On to the Four Faves -- if you missed the last one, visit it here:  http://blog.paigemcdaniel.org/2014/05/four-favorite-things-i-love-right-now.html
  1. I am the biggest fan of Ina Garten, also known as the Barefoot Contessa.  Her cookbooks are the best and I have never made a single thing from any of them that I didn't like.  I usually don't have them all lined up like this because there is always one open near the stove!
  2. I didn't even know why I wanted a cuckoo clock, but I just always wanted one.  The other night I thought -- wonder if they have them on Amazon?  Of course they do and now this one is mine.  I love it and when I bought it I called my mom to tell her and she said we had one when I was about 3 years old.  So glad to have it and this one has a light sensor so at night you don't hear it.  LOVE!
  3. Summer always has me thinking about camp -- about to write the Hicks girls a note to Mystic in a minute -- so of course camp makes me think about s'mores, which makes me think about these tasty morsels of goodness -- LU Petit EcolierDark Chocolate European Biscuits.  Pick some up today and buy the dark chocolate.  I prefer milk chocolate normally in all other things, but these are best in dark.  Trust me.

  4. Ah, Netflix on my I-Pad.  What else can I say?  I love being able to walk around the house and watch it wherever I happen to light.  The simple joys of life.
What are your four faves?

I'm sick of myself.

I said something the other day (out loud) that I haven't been able to quit thinking about.

Joe and I were at the Junior League of Dallas Ball (thanks to my friend Greg) and we were walking around talking to friends and taking pics with the I-Phone, etc.  Someone stopped us and said, "Would you mind taking our picture?" and handed us her phone.  What I said back is the problem:

"Of course I'll take it -- that's the only reason we came to the Ball!"

Yuck.  Long slow clap for me.

It seems to me that now all I do when I go to events is pose for pictures with my friends.  While the entertainment is happening, I am furiously taking pics that I can post on FaceBook, on Twitter, on Pinterest, on Instagram, on this blog -- basically missing the moment.

So while I took this amazing shot at Diffa the other night,  I missed seeing the show, actually talking to a person, or just thinking and observing.

I no longer want to attend fabulous events and spend lots of time utilizing my basically non-existent photography skills on an inferior photographic device (Sorry, Apple, but it is.) so I can remember an event through some bad photos.

I want to attend and be present in the moment.

Please invite me again -- I missed the party.

Caveat:  Under no circumstances does this mean that I want Jeanne Prejean and Nancy Gopez to stop bringing their cameras -- I want to see party pics, just not take them.  Plus, I paid good money for that dress, after all.

Apple v BlackBerry and McDonald's v Wendy's: Thoughts

Joanna and I just got back to our office after a visit to the Dallas Children's Advocacy Center (DCAC) this morning.  I asked for the meeting with Lyn Davis (CEO) and Chris Culak (Chief Development Officer) because I often get questions about how what we do fits in with what they do.

NOTE:  Here's my short answer to those who are wondering...  While all children involved with CPS are eligible for Community Partners of Dallas' programs and services (CPD will serve about 20,000 kids this year through all of our programs), the DCAC serves a distinct subset of those who have suffered from the most horrific types of abuse with forensic interviews, ongoing therapy, and more.

It was great meeting with Lyn and Chris and seeing all they do to help 2,500 children annually.

Being in the non-profit world is different from being in the for-profit arena.  I would imagine that it might be difficult for the BlackBerry guys to call up Apple and go over and take a tour and speak about program specifics.  Would McDonald's take a meeting with Wendy's to discuss the new burger they were rolling out in a couple of months?

In the non-profit world, we want to help one another succeed because the greater good is served by working together.

I love my job.

P.S.  My #FundraisingFriday gift is going to the DCAC this week.
